All about the Story
Workshop and Evening Session
Thursday is all about the story.
We have the final of our Flash Fiction competition – the winner will be announced at the evening performance, and the winning writers are invited to read their pieces and talk about their inspiration.
We will be joined by Xanthe Gresham-Knight, a professional story teller, in hte evening performance, and be treated to a rendition of one of her stories.
And we are running a workshop during the day, creating something to read or perform in the evening session. Please note, attending the workshop includes a place at the evening session, where we can read our work, and talk about what the story means to us, and the messages we wanted to bring out.

Ever wanted to tell a story, blending poetry with myth and meaning?
Ever wanted to make a story flow, mix, mingle and drip?
Ever wanted to make it lyrical, poetic and lush?
Let’s explore this together as we re-weave an ancient tale, creating fabric both fine and dense, re-telling the telling in our own method and way.
Long ago, way before the records we cling to now can see, before the time that our written history began – and even now, and into the future – tales were told for reasons of import – handing down knowledge, giving perspective, educating listeners with folded meanings and truths.
Our oral tradition lasted millennia, looking deep into our past, building wisdom on wisdom.
Let’s go back to that time and work out our own, lyrical version of an ancient tale, staying true to the story but putting it in our terms, in our ways – the way we think, with some of the messages and learning we want to impart.
On this workshop, let’s go on a journey and create a re-telling, ready to perform that night in the oh so quiet, oh so gentle atmosphere of Crypt Gallery’s undercroft.
In the hushed air, weave vapours and truths, reality and myth, and see where our minds can take us.
The format of the workshop runs like this:
2pm 2.45 – assemble and introduce ourselves, before getting into the story to find connections between us and the tale’s messages.
2.45 – 3pm – break
3pm – 4 create a re-telling, each of us taking a part and collaborating between us to identify our messages, and create a new version – true to the original, and wholly ours
4pm – 4.30 – break: cup of tea, reflect and regather
4.30 – 5.30 gather and organise the tale, rehearse our parts, and weave the whole into that fabric that brings intrigue and depth to what could be mistaken for a simple story.
5.30pm – 7 – you’re invited to join Rich for a bite to eat and a cup of tea, either bring a sandwich or get something locally (sorry, the food’s not included!). Or simply take the time to reflect, rest and think about the evening’s performance.
7.pm – 9.30: take part in the evening’s performance, performing our tale and then talking about the messages we see within, alongside the judging and reading of the winners of our competition, and hear a story told by a true legend of the storytelling world.
7 pm – Crypt Gallery, 23 Church Street, Seaford, BN25 1HD

Come and join Rich, Xanthe Gresham Knight, our story winners and our workshop attendees, as we focus on the story.
We’ll announce the winner and runner-up of our flash-fiction competition, and present prizes. The winner and runner-up are invited to read their work, and talk about their inspiration, in the relaxed atmosphere of the undercroft.
During the afternoon, in our workshop, a tale will have been crafted, ready for the telling. We’ll read, or perform, our crafted tale in the evening session, and talk about the meaning we found in the story, and our personal view or relationship with that meaning.
Xanthe Gresham-Knight will round off the day with a fabulous rendition of one of her stories, a real treat in the rarefied atmosphere of the undercroft.
Come prepared for an evening focussed purely on the Story, and all that lies within.
