many years ago
I read a book
by a long-distance walker
called John Hillaby
who wrote – in his introduction –
that walking was like making love
to the landscape
and I thought
if your idea of making love
is stomping over someone
in big muddy boots
I’m glad I’m not the object
of your affections
and I also thought
that when we want to sound
passionate or profound
we reach down poetic language
from the topmost shelf
and shoehorn it into
our discourse –
and sometimes it’s a metaphor
too far

Wonderful stuff, Chris, as ever.
Very amusing and often true but possibly you cheated by taking the original comment out of context? If not then Mr Hillaby should have re-read his work a bit more carefully.
Enjoyed your point of view Chris.
To stretch the shoe fitting metaphor further. Too tight shoes could become crippling. Making for a very uncomfortable walk across the countryside. Too loose and maybe blisters. Same I guess with the top shelf of poetry. Its got to be just right.
Just my silly perspective.
